Hip and Knee Arthroplasty, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. (2021)

Job Description:

Training attachments are available in Edinburgh to appropriate postgraduate applicants in Orthopaedic Surgery. Applicants should be highly motivated and have a  high- quality curriculum vitae.

The Fellow will participate in all aspects of patient care at The New Royal Infirmary including clinics, educational meetings, research and varied surgical procedures. The Fellow will also get an opportunity to complete his/her own operating lists. The fellowship is primarily in arthroplasty, but will cater, if possible, if the candidate has other interests.

Experience will be gained in some of the most complex DDH and revision work in UK as well as primary knee replacement and both cemented and uncemented hip replacement surgery. Computer navigation, shoulder, elbow and ankle arthroplasty is also performed.

About the Location

The climate in Edinburgh is best from May to September, but whenever you go, you are likely to see both sun and rain. In summer, daylight hours are long, and the evenings seem endless. In winter, it is cold and daylight hours are short, but with so much going on, Edinburgh is still worth visiting. Edinburgh is home to some of the best galleries and museums in the UK, so whether you are into modern art, want to learn more about Scotland’s history or fancy a trip down memory lane with the toys of your childhood, the city has something for you.

About the Facility

The New Royal Infirmary opened in 2003 and is said to be one of the finest modern hospitals in Europe. It was designed by doctors and nurses and does a huge volume of arthroplasty surgery.

About the Supervisors

Professor Colin Howie, FRCS, is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at the New Royal Infirmary. Prof Howie is a past president of the BOA and British Hip Society, a member of the executive committee of the European Rheumatoid Arthritis Surgical Society, a member of the steering committee for the National Joint Registry in the UK and was instrumental in establishing the Scottish arthroplasty registry which pre-dates the UK registry.

Mr. JT Sam Patton, FRCS(Tr & Orth), FRCSEd, MB ChB undertook his Specialist Orthopaedic Training in Edinburgh and was appointed to the staff at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and the Murrayfield Hospital in 2003. Mr. Patton is a specialist hip and knee surgeon with expertise in difficult joint replacement surgery, and musculo-skeletal oncology surgery. He is currently the head of the Department.

Mr. Paul Gaston, FRCS(Tr & Orth), FRCS(Ed), MB ChB (Hons) completed Orthopaedic Training in Oxford and Edinburgh and undertook Specialist Fellowships in lower limb hip and knee joint surgery in Brisbane (Australia) and Edinburgh. Mr. Gaston’s fields of interest include all aspects of hip surgery including complex primary and revision Arthroplasty and hip arthroscopy.

Mr. Richard Burnett, FRCS (Tr & Orth); FRCS (Ed); MBCHB undertook his Specialist Orthopaedic Training in London and Edinburgh and was appointed to the staff at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and the Murrayfield Hospital in 1995. Mr. Burnett is a specialist knee surgeon with expertise in complex primary and revision knee joint replacement surgery.

Mr. Gavin Macpherson, FRCS (Tr & Orth); FRCS (Ed); MBCHB completed his orthopaedic training in Edinburgh before moving to Sydney, Australia for sub-specialist fellowship training in arthroplasty and sports knee surgery. Mr. Macpherson has a special interest in hip and knee arthroplasty including computer assisted surgery, robotic assisted surgery and high tibial osteotomy.

 

Fellowship Duration:

6 – 12 months commencing February and August.

Stipend:

£45000 – 12 months (additional earnings available through on-call work).
